Doublings for Diatonic Triads and Seventh Chords
The following list summarizes doublings for diatonic triads in major keys
- I, IV, V, double the root of the chord
- V7
- Complete resolving to an Incomplete I chord
- Double the Root, omit the 5th, resolving to a complete I chord
Note that with inversions, all pitches are present
- ii
- Double the root
- Double the third
- ii7 seventh of the chord resolves downwards
- Complete
- Double the root, omit the 5th
- Double the 3rd, omit the 5th
Note that with inversions all pitches are present
- vi
- in a regular chord progression, double the root
- in a deceptive cadence, double the 3rd
- iii, double the root
- vii6, double the 3rd
- I6, IV6, V6, double the root or the 5th,
usually depending on the Soprano
- ii6, double the 3rd
