Generating the pitches for V/V and its related chords involves two steps:

  1. Determine the root of V, which will be the temporary key centre
  2. Generate the pitches of the chord relative to the temporary key

For example, if we are in C major and need to determine the pitches for V/V:

  1. The root of V in C major is G
  2. V of G major (the temporary key) is D F# A

In G major, V7/V:

  1. The root of V in G major is D
  2. V7of D major is A C# E G

In F major, vii6/V:

  1. The root of V is C
  2. vii6 of C major is B D F

You already know the doublings for these chords:

  • V/V double the root
  • V7/V complete, or double the root, omit the fifth
  • vii6/V double the third
